It was almost five years ago while studying at Parsons School of Design that I had the pleasure to meet one of the most important people in my life today. She made an impression without so much as saying a word. Cleo’s poise and assertive confidence was only complimented by the fact that her self-introduction to the class was charming, optimistic and warm. She is from Canada, I from Seattle and our mutual love of the Pacific Northwest instantly made us friends.

It was clear this girl had more than just style, unlike most students in our program who were just extending their education, she had a career as a stylist and worked in costume design for films prior to her enrollment at Parsons. She had the ambition to create designs with her point of view, that were never over-the-top costumey ~ probably because she had already been there. Her motivation has always been; wearablity, functionality, and simplicity. And because of that, she was one of the few students who consistently wore her own designs. Cleo and Steven Ahn's decision to begin their own fashion line, Primary, was a natural evolution for people that are passionate about creating a lifestyle brand. Her sense of style is her own, on-trend, and never frivolous. Denim is universal. Regardless of your style or the kind of lifestyle you lead, denim plays an integral part in all our lives. We identified a select group of distinguished New Yorkers with a unique sense of style to represent DL1961's Denim Movement. Each of the following participants is a personification of the DL1961 brand: a pioneer in their respective profession with notable achievements in his/her undeniably demanding industry. Beginning June 1st and running throughout the summer, we will highlight a progressive New Yorker making great things happen in their field. At the end of August, once all nominees have been revealed, fans can then vote for their favorite denim movement member on our website.
